Science has played a role in all of the food we eat today, beginning at the dawn of humanity when people first realized they needed to eat to survive and experimented with everything to discover which parts of the ecosystem were edible, leading up to today’s gastronomic decoctions created in clean laboratories developing everything from new preservatives to stave off the growth of molds, to bombarding fruits and veggies with radiation to kill off bacteria, fungus, and microscopic parasites. The realm of science fiction has long been at the forefront of creative uses of food, dreaming up ideals like the Star Trek food replicator, to showing us that the animals of the foreign lands of Stargate actually taste like chicken.
Eating and cooking are common experiences across the board, and including them in science fiction often serves to make the extraordinary worlds the creators weave that much more believable and grounded in the human condition. Even superheroes need to eat, and the world of the Evolution series is no exception to the rule.
In the final installment of the series, Evolution: HEX, Candace meets a man who runs the kitchens at the “enemy” compound; a man by the name of Graham Ballard. One of Graham’s specialties is his apple dumplings, so today I’d like to offer up this gem of a recipe for you to try at home, and I promise you won’t be disappointed!
2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored
(10 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup butter
1 1/2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Mountain Dew ™
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Roll each apple wedge in crescent roll dough starting at the smallest end. Pinch to seal and place in the baking dish.
- Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apple dumplings. Pour Mountain Dew™ over the dumplings.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
As you salivate over your cooling dumplings, I’d like to give you a helping of whipped cream on top of this treat. On September 28th, 2015, I’ll be releasing the first book in the follow-on to the Evolution series, The Chronicles of ISLE. I would definitely suggest reading the first trilogy before diving into the stories of the second generation of sexy superheroes, however, and you can begin that journey here. If that news isn’t sweet enough for you, perhaps you’d like an exclusive first look at the covers for the ENTIRE forthcoming series!
Never seen publicly before, I present to you the covers for Spark, Riptide, and Unbreakable!
Hope that’s enough to whet your appetite!
Lastly, on to the giveaway. Up for grabs are ebooks and giftcards and all sorts of stuff. This runs for one week only, so get those entries in!
