Awkward Turtle vs. Scary New Thing

07.02.2013 by Starla Huchton // 19 Comments

So here’s the thing. I’m a weirdo. This statement probably surprises no one who’s interacted with me ever. On social media I tend to be pretty outgoing and vocal, and this is also true about me face to face… well, once I’ve gotten to know you some.

I like to call myself an awkward turtle. Here’s why. I’m the kind of person who, when faced with a new social situation, will find the one or two people I know and attach myself to them because I am, frankly, terrified of taking those first steps in introductions. I imagine I come off as standoffish or maybe bored, but this is categorically untrue. Awkward Turtle has simply retreated into her shell until another less-awkward turtle has knocked on said shell and given her permission to come out and interact with the others. I have never been the kind of turtle to strike up a conversation with another strange turtle because I am horribly, terribly awful at breaking the ice. My mind goes totally blank and I can’t think of a single thing to say to engage the other turtles. I go into every new interaction assuming the other person has zero interest in who I am or what I have to say, probably because then there’s no risk of disappointment. This is who I am. This zero-expectation was my safety net growing up. It’s a holdover from childhood, when almost every interaction I had was inevitably painful for me. While I’m working on changing the little voice in my head that fills me with doubts and self-criticism, the scars still remain.

That said, enter the Scary New Thing.

Aliens Amongst Us

SFR Brigade Midsummer Blog Hop

Greetings, Starfighter!

Welcome to my stop on the SFR Brigade’s Blog Hop. If you haven’t come by this post as part of the blog hop, you can read up on what this is about by clicking the banner at the top of this post or here.

The theme this year is Out of This World. After careful consideration, I decided to put my own spin on it, by talking about how alien our own planet can be sometimes. Specifically, and since it pertains to my current SFR series, the amazing, bizarre forms of life in our oceans.

More Writing, More Travelling

06.18.2013 by Starla Huchton // Leave a Comment

We are halfway through the year, a mere six months. It’s been an amazingly productive time for me, and not only because of having three books done in the Endure series.

If you’ve been watching my Twitter feed or kept an eye on my WIP widgets in the side bar on this site, you know which project I decided to work on after finishing the first draft of Progeny. For NaNoWriMo 2012, I worked on a story that had about 23k words already on it. I talked about this a great deal on the Roundtable Podcast’s 4-writer project for that month, and you can listen to me talk about the premise for Apprentice beginning here. I ended up with an additional 66k+ words for that month, but the story wasn’t finished.

ENDURE Series Info and Stuff

06.05.2013 by Starla Huchton // 1 Comment

Well, it’s been an exciting week! Maven dropped on Monday and emails have been going in and out of my computer like crazy! Writing the book is not the hard part, but everything after, it would seem. It’s all good stuff coming down the pipe, however, so I’m happy to be as busy as I am. It means I’m doing something right with this series!

A few things first, some links to get out of the way.

This is not the post you were looking for…

So, it’s release day for Maven. (Kindle, Smashwords, B&N, and print)

I should be excited, muppet flailing around my house like a crazy person.

Instead, I am stuck in an endless loop of questioning what I’ve done in putting out a *gasp* Science Fiction Romance novel, alternating with being extremely angry at what I’ve been reading about the SF community lately.

MAVEN Social Media Pre-Launch Party!

05.18.2013 by Starla Huchton // 1 Comment

Wow. So, the cover reveal for Maven was a HUGE success. Like OMG huge. I never expected the level of participation I got with that and the number of eyeballs that ogled my precious astounds me.

I figured since that went so well, why not have even more fun with this book? The squeaky wheels in my brain started turning and here’s what I came up with.

Muppet Flail
Pretty much me every time a reveal post went up. Every. Time.

MAVEN – The Big Reveal!

05.16.2013 by Starla Huchton // 4 Comments

Today is the day!

I’ve been bouncing out of my chair for about a week now, overwhelmed, excited, terrified, humbled, grateful… so many things. But IT’S FINALLY HERE!

On May 4th, I put out a call to anyone that had a blog that might be interested in helping me reveal the cover for my upcoming release, MAVEN. I did this thinking I would get a handful of folks that would say yes, maybe, oh, ten, possibly a dozen. I sat back and waited. I saw my friends RT the request. I sent out a few emails to blogs I wanted to specifically target because of their audience (genre specific). But mostly I just crossed my fingers and hoped I wasn’t throwing a party no one would show up for.

And then… it got crazy.

The ENDURE Series – Release Update!

05.04.2013 by Starla Huchton // 7 Comments

I promised news on the availability of the first book in the Endure series, Maven, earlier this week, so here I am, back to tell you all about what’s going on.

After a few nibbles from the traditional publishing world (which was pretty exciting and frustrating and well, you know), I’ve decided to take the plunge and go full-bore into self-publishing the series.

So when can you expect this out in the world? Well, after embarking on another round of edits to make sure everything is as tight as it can be, I’ve set a date.

Shifting Gears: From Fantasy to Science Fiction

04.03.2013 by Starla Huchton // Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever written anything remotely Science Fiction-related, you’ve probably done research. Personally, it wasn’t something I had ever really considered up until a few years ago. That was the beauty of primarily writing Fantasy: you can make it up and no one will question it (usually, there are outliers).

I’ve found Science Fiction to be an entirely different animal. I have to be honest here. I was never much into “hard” sci-fi, full of detailed explanations of tech and high level theories. I always preferred Fantasy’s “wave a wand and call it magic” approach, thus negating the need to explain why things happened (I’m not arguing rules of various magic systems here, just go with this for argument’s sake, okay?). This was one-hundred and fifty percent true for me… until I discovered Steampunk.
